As I See ItSeptember 2002

Every month A Woman’s View features women who have surmounted obstacles, achieved success, survived adversity or made the world a better place in some way. We keep increasing our number of pages because there are so many wonderful stories about so many wonderful women. There is never room for them all. At first, we thought we were writing about extraordinary women. But, each month reveals another wave of remarkable accomplishments and by sheer numbers, it is apparent that extraordinary achievement is quite commonplace in our valley.

Women work. They work well, they work hard, and their contributions to our community are invaluable. A Woman’s View is pleased to offer recognition whenever we can. We are proud to promote women owned businesses. We want to do more.

Women frequently lament the pervasive presence and strength of “the good ole boy network”. It is time and past time that women have a network of their own.

Starting in September, A Woman’s View will offer a directory on our website for women owned businesses and services. Any woman owned business serving our area from Charleston, Parkersburg, Marietta or throughout the Mid Ohio Valley, is welcome to a listing with the company name, a sentence about the service or business, contact, address, phone numbers, website and email address. We will also list information and contacts for groups and organizations that are woman oriented. Contact information about agencies that are concerned with women and women’s issues will be posted as well.

On the website, the West Virginia Women’s Commission will maintain a list of pending legislation affecting women along with the times and places of the Commission’s public meetings. Sources available to women for financial, technical and management assistance will be included as they are confirmed.

Women looking for work are invited to submit a paragraph (125 words or less) describing themselves and the type of work they seek. Women owned businesses are welcome to submit job descriptions for positions that are open in their company. Both will be posted on the website. Our goal is the development and maintenance of a working network for women. Our contribution is a free and public forum for women to help themselves and each other. Our hope is that the women of Charleston and the Mid Ohio Valley will employ it to the fullest.

One single thread can start a network, but it takes a thousand to make it tight and strong. Help us weave a woman’s web. Send us your information about women owned and operated enterprises and organizations.
Together, we have the strength to embrace the universe and the knowledge to reach the stars. Together, we can make those stars shine brilliantly to illuminate the dark places and dark times of our life.
