Innovation in the Treatment of Varicose Veins
By Dr. Arvind Viradia
Varicose veins are abnormally swollen and bluish in color which may appear like worms on the skin’s surface. They occur due to a defect in vein valves leading to backward flow in the veins. The most common symptoms include leg pain, night cramps, burning, swelling, and aching.
The previously used treatment was stripping the veins under general anesthesia. Newer options to treat varicose veins are the use of a laser to seal or close the veins.
This new treatment is called Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA). The treatment consists of laser fibers inserted in the veins under ultrasound guidance. Then, a diluted numbing medication is injected around the laser fiber to make a sleeve and then laser fibers are slowly pulled back to seal or close the vein.
Most patients experience very minimal pain and bruising after treatment and no missed work.
The procedure has excellent cosmetic results. Most insurances pay for the procedure. The recurrence rate is very low with no scarring. Medium size varicose veins can be treated with micro phlebectomy and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy.
