The symptoms of allergies are just as much a part of Spring as buds and blooming bulbs. The treatments are sometimes as disconcerting or unpleasant as the symptoms.
Antihistamines and decongestants can cause drowsiness, which can be dangerous for drivers. Side effects from prescription medication can add nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea to an already dispiriting day. Plus, according to the labels, many medications will actually make allergy symptoms worse if taken longer than a few days.
Some relief from allergy woes may be as close as the kitchen pantry.
Many ‘hot’ spices and their extracts, like oil of oregano, are powerful tools for opening clogged sinus passages, halting mucus secretion, and taming allergy symptoms.
One theory of why hot and spicy herbs and oils help alleviate allergy symptoms is because they may kill fungus, what some consider to be the hidden culprit behind what are usually called “allergic reactions”.
Rather than an allergy to pollen, dust, or animals, some people may be experiencing a reaction to fungus in their sinuses. The sneezing, runny nose, and sinus inflammation may not be allergic reactions, but immune system reactions.
Single-cell fungi which make up molds and yeasts are found everywhere in the world. Fungal spores, the reproductive part of the organism, become airborne like pollen. Some people may develop allergies to fungi, and for others fungi may trigger an immune system response while simultaneously reducing the immune system’s ability to fight invaders like dander, dust, and pollen.
For some people, wild oregano oil may be the solution. Applying wild oregano oil to the nose or a few drops under the tongue may reduce a runny nose and watering eyes during allergy season.
Frequent hand washing with pump soap that has had oil of oregano added, may also help reduce bacteria.
Eating soups, drinking juices and drinking plenty of water with a few drops of oregano oil in the water can help fight congestion.
Sweeten seasonal symptoms with crude raw honey. It assists in the release of mucous, is a natural immune tonic, and helps soothe sore throats while preventing or halting coughs.
