Hairdressers are often a woman’s best friend in a relationship cultivated with care, and often cherished in perpetuity. No woman wants to anger her stylist, and women face the prospect of changing stylists with dread. Like all good relationships, the stylist/customer relationship is based on trust and communication. Professional stylists encourage their clients to be as clear as possible about what they want, what they expect and what they can’t afford.

Since a picture is indeed worth a million words, hairstylists recommend bringing a picture to get the idea across when it comes to a new hairstyle. With a picture, both client and stylist will be on the same page, with a visual goal of the expected outcome. And, a picture offers a perfect opportunity to discuss realistic and unrealistic expectations.

Stylists are the first to admit they are not magicians. There are just some things that certain hair can and cannot do. Perhaps the hope of changing dark, curly hair into straight, blond hair must remain an unfulfilled wish. Perhaps, it’s for the best.

But, the salon is not a place to keep quiet. Customers should not hold back their ideas or their desires since being open and honest with the stylist about hair issues means better choices for everyone involved. Whether it’s how much time a customer spends on her hair each day or how much money she’s willing to spend on hair products, the more a stylist knows, the more likely the customer is to get recommendations and treatments that are appropriate for her and acceptable to her. A $75 highlight and color treatment isn’t worth the investment for a woman who doesn’t have the time or budget to maintain it.

Women are especially reluctant to admit dissatisfaction to their stylists. A woman who finds herself dismayed by the view in the mirror at home should not be shy. She should go back immediately, or as soon as possible to get it fixed. Most salons give their clients a week or two to return free of charge. The stylist/customer relationship is a two way street. Stylists have a vested interest in keeping their customers happy and looking good. A great-looking, satisfied customer is the best of all advertisements.
That’s something to remember when a new style or hot new trend seems irresistible.

Even women who know just what they want should remain open-minded. Listening and take into consideration their stylists suggestions might prevent disaster later. Blond streaks or burgundy highlights just aren’t for everyone. Sometimes, even though women most appreciate a hairdresser with skill, they also can benefit from a hairdresser with the courage to say no.
