On the Shelf
Women manage to accumulate cosmetics almost magically, with no effort at all, for fun, for adventure, for special occasions and of course, because they were on sale. And, most women can’t bring themselves to abandon their foundation follies or blush blunders because they just might need that exactly weird shade one day. However, there comes a time when even good things, but especially the things that didn’t work, must go.
According to the experts at L’Oreal, foundation, stays fresh for one year after opening and three years if unopened. But, even favorites should be discarded if they change in color, odor or appearance.
Unopened moisturizers and creams are also good for three years. They remain fresh for six months once opened.
Powder eye shadows and pencils generally stay fresh for 18 months.
Mascara and liquid eyeliners should be replaced every three months.
Powders should be used in 18 months. Lipstick is good for three years.
Use that overly-aromatic Pina Colada shampoo and green apple body wash to clean makeup brushes that can gather dirt, oil and bacteria. Run brushes under running water, apply a small amount of shampoo to bristles and work into a light lather, rinse bristles thoroughly under running water and air dry. Hanging them with bristles down keeps water from collecting at the base of the bristles which can eventually loosen them and make them fall out. A rubber band wrapped around the handle makes the brush easy to hang.
