Beauty and the Beam

By: Paul A. Blair, MD

Hair, spider veins, blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles, and many other skin surface irregularities can be improved with laser technology. Even a certain degree of skin tightening can be achieved.

Not so many years ago, when someone wanted to look better, her only choice was surgery. Today, the greatest change has been the introduction of cosmetic lasers. These lasers are non-ablative (do not destroy tissue) with essentially no down time. Thus, we are in the era of “Beauty and the Beam.”
There are many types of lasers and each one of them is different due to the wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum that the laser uses. The laser can only be one specific wavelength. In the skin of our body, there are different elements that can absorb the energy of the laser and these are called chromophores. Depending on what we want to accomplish, will dictate which chromophore will be targeted. You need a different laser with its unique wavelength for each different chromophore. In other words, one laser cannot do everything. You need multiple lasers to perform multiple aspects of facial rejuvenation or treat undesirable characteristics.

Alex-Alexa has five different lasers. With multiple lasers, you can have an array of skin cosmetics done from unwanted hair removed to facial rejuvenation.

By targeting the different chromophores in the skin with the different lasers, the best result can be achieved. Truly, “Beauty and The Beam” have come of age!

Paul A. Blair, MD is the medical director of Alex – Alexa a comprehensive laser center. Alex – Alexa is located at 3669 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, WV. 304.201.2539 or 1.866.243.2539.
