Microdermabrasion is the gentle abrasion of the skin. This
is usually performed with an apparatus consisting of a hand piece
that gently traces over the skin, delivering micro crystals that gently
exfoliate the epidermis, the top layer of skin. Simultaneously,
a vacuum that is built into the hand piece whisks away the exfoliated
skin and the excess crystals, leaving the treated skin instantly smoother.
Exposure to the sun, the elements and poor eating habits all have
a hand in appearance, causing sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles,
age spots and blemishes develop. The complexion becomes more
dull, sallow and no longer homogeneous. Microdermabrasion can improve
all of these, and can also improve mild acne scarring.
The procedure is performed by a highly trained specialist and is
relatively painless. Some clients compare the sensation to using
a puff buff on their skin, while others describe it as a refreshing,
tingling feeling. Many find the procedure to be relaxing, like
to a facial. Treatments can be performed on all parts of
the body including the face, neck, hands and chest. Each treatment
takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on the body area being treated.
Microdermabrasion works by removing the top layers of the epidermis,
also known as exfoliation. Fibroblasts, cells that produce collagen,
become stimulated. When stimulated by microdermabrasion,
the cells go into a repair mode that lays down new collagen producing
a “younger” layer of skin. Outcomes vary depending
on age, skin type and general condition, but even after one treatment,
the skin will appear and feel rejuvenated, smooth and softened. Typically
a series of 5-6 treatments is suggested to reach a desired level of
improvement. Following-up with a good skin care at home and a
maintenance program of microdermabrasion sustains the appearance.
Microdermabrasion can be combined with other skin care regiments
and treatments such as facial oxygenation and non-ablative laser therapy
though it is has very satisfactory results by itself. In addition,
microdermabrasion can help condition the skin and rev up the healing
process for more aggressive skin treatment if that is desired.
