October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2003, an estimated
1,600 WV women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately
300 women will die from the disease.
October 6, 2003 has been designated as WV Breast and Cervical Cancer
Screening Program’s (WVBCCSP) Breast Cancer Awareness Day. On
that date and throughout the month of October, West Virginians in
all 55 counties will gather to demonstrate a commitment to fight the
disease that has claimed the lives of many women. Wreath hanging
ceremonies and proclamation signings will raise awareness about the
importance of early detection. Also during October, Mountains
of Hope: the West Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition
and its partners will sponsor 15 regional “Walks for Women…Take
a Step Against Breast Cancer.” The Walks are a statewide
effort intended to raise awareness of the need for breast cancer screening,
to honor breast cancer survivors and to remember those who have died
from the disease. Walks for Women also raise donations from individuals
and corporate sponsors to benefit the WVBCCSP Diagnostic and Treatment
Fund. To celebrate all the women and men who volunteer their
time and talent in helping the WVBCCSP with these events, a Volunteer
Appreciation Luncheon will be held on November 18, 2003 at the Days
Inn in Flatwoods, WV.
