Dr. Heather McCarter
For years Mothers have said "stand up straight and don't slouch."
Society views slumped shoulders and a rounded spine as a sign of timidty,
lack of self-worth, insecurity or fear. However, there is much more
to slumped postures than the emotional upheaval that has been known
to produce them.
Today, more and more people are slumping their shoulders due to the
fast-paced world of technological advancements: desk-itis, factory
line repetition, and general stress. Whether it’s hours of video
games or television; days at the desk/on the computer, repetitious
motion at the job, or "the weight of the world on your shoulders"-more
and more people slouch.
Why should people stand up straight? Not because mother's have said
so, but, because it's good for overall health and strength. There
are many benefits to standing tall with the shoulders rolled back,
shoulder blades in-ward, chin up, breast bone out (Walk with the breastbone),
the belly held firm and the pelvis tucked under. Yes, postural balance
promotes self-assurance, but it also clears one's head, strengthens
one's muscles, reduces back pain (by strengthening overstretches,
slouched muscles), and helps us breath deeper, grow stronger, and
emanate confidence.
When walking the dog, sitting at the desk, or pacing the house try
a few simple steps:
Hold the head up, chin high.
Roll shoulders back and down, allowing the breastbone to lead the
way.
Slightly tuck under the belly.
Then walk normally, enjoying the new form the body is taking (remembering
to breath while walking).
Practice makes perfect, nothing happens overnight. Start babystepping
to a better posture to feel taller, stronger, and more confident.
Don't stand up straight just to please Mom-do it for good health!
Plus, it makes you look like a Queen.
