Hip Job Hop
A recent Monster.com survey found that finding a better job was one of the top New Year Resolutions. Hoping to improve their finances, learn something new and enjoy life more, many women take a long, hard look at their career over the first long weekend of the year and realize they could be doing better.
January 1st may be when many start thinking about shifting direction, but any month will do. Experts say it’s important not to make the change in a rush. Having a detailed transition plan in place is essential because it lays the groundwork for leaving present circumstances with the best possible references while lining up a more satisfying new position. Any considered change should have both an “exit strategy” and an “entrance strategy”—a plan for moving away from the current position and a way to find a more fulfilling one.
When building a plan, the job seekers should clearly articulate what she wants and what she has to offer others, verbally and on paper. Personal connections can help her promote her value and expand her reach in the job market.
Making the decision to chuck a job on a bad day is a bad idea. A woman who is preparing to change jobs should seriously evaluate her present position to see where it comes up short and weigh it in terms of how it satisfies, not only financially, but personally. Take time and focus to identify the right prospects, not just other prospects. A woman who makes that effort at each stage of her career, will be better able to position herself to seize potential opportunities as they arise.
