Small Business Hurrahs

In recognition of the small business community’s contribution to the American economy and society, one week each year is designated as National Small Business Week. During that week, the US Small Business Administration presents awards to the nations entrepreneurs and small business champions at the state district and national level to recognize small business owners and advocates.

The Small Business Person of the Year is presented to an entrepreneur for developing an outstanding, growing business, increasing jobs, increasing sales, overcoming adversity and community contributions. In West Virginia, the Small Business Person of the year for 2006 is Connie Saunders,

President of Saunders Staffing, Inc., in Bluefield.
Small Business Champion Awards are presented to individuals who promote small business, volunteer their time and services to small business interest groups, advocate the cause of small business through legislation, or use their professional expertise to assist small business owners. There are several areas of championship and though both men and women receive awards, three other women were also honored for their efforts.

The award for Home-based Business Champion was given to Kathleen Panek, the owner of Gillum House Bed and Breakfast in Shinnston for her accomplishments in advancing home-based businesses, her dedication of time and energy to improve conditions for home-based businesses and for improving the economic climate of home-based businesses.

The Women in Business Champion Award was presented to Judith K. Sheppard, President and CEO of Professional Services of America, Inc., based in Parkersburg. Judy was recognized for her efforts to increase business and financial opportunities for women, for strengthening the role of women business owners within the community and for her advocacy of the women-owned business community as a whole.

The Small Business Journalist of the year for West Virginia and also for the Mid Atlantic Region is Pat Lawrence, editor of A Woman’s View, based in Parkersburg, for her efforts to increase public understanding of small business contributions, and her contribution of news and features highlighting small business issues.
