Airport Manager Retires; Becomes Consultant

Carolyn StrockCarolyn Strock

Carolyn Strock, was the Mid Ohio Valley’s Regional Airport Manager for 20 some years. Upon her planned retirement, Carolyn started a new career as a consultant. She opened C. E. Strock Consulting and is off on a new path of excitement.
“I had an interesting job as the arport manager of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport. Working with the airport staff, Airport Authorities, political leaders, and the business community was a pleasure. An opportunity would soon be staring me in the face. I could leave a comfortable, secure position and be paid a monthly stipend for doing so. True, it would not be a living wage, but surely I could do something else.”

Carolyn did a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of her abilities. Although Carolyn was an Accredited Airport Executive, her formal educational background was a glaring weakness in her opinion. She had continuing educational units in the aviation and business fields, but no academic letters after her name. “When I considered the competition, I decided an MBA was a must,” she said. It took Carolyn more than a year to complete her B.S. degree at Ohio Valley University and then two more years to complete her Executive M.B.A. at Ohio University.

According to Carolyn, “one of the opportunities I had foreseen was that as a small, woman-owned business. I could become a certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) to work on federally-sponsored grant projects. That would offset any weakness that age might impose in my looking for work. I would work as a subcontractor, not as an employee, and bring DBE credits to the table. Becoming a certified DBE in my home state, West Virginia, was the first step”.

Carolyn has recently become a certified DBE in West Virginia and several of the adjacent states. She has her office at the Center for Community Service Agencies operated by the Volunteer Action Center in downtown Parkersburg. Carolyn, her husband David, and her two sons live in Vienna, WV.
