Think Small for the Season
Giant discount stores and national chains may have the biggest, brightest ads but they don’t necessarily have the best buys or the very personal gifts that make this season so special. Owners of small boutiques, shops and specialty stores appreciate and need the business. It's their biggest season too, and for many, holiday purchases are what will keep their doors open all year long.
Think outside the mall.
Many of Marietta’s Front Street stores that were flooded out, some twice, would be delighted to share their holiday goods and good spirits. Riverside Artists offers one of a kind art and artistry, Terri Ann’s has the latest fashions and accessories, Marietta Wine Cellars makes their own excellent wine (and serves great lunch), Needful Things carries antiques and collectibles with prices to fit every budget. Twisted Sisters has wild and wonderful accessories for home and self. Schafer Leather Store has fashionable, well made leather goods including handbags, hats, boots, jackets and luggage. Townsquare Fabrics is the perfect place to find a gift for knitters, quilters and crafters. Putnam Chocolates are a perfect fit for any woman on the list. Guys and Gals have very affordable, fun jewelry and clothing for both sexes. The Gallery has charming art and home décor. And, of course, Rossi Pasta has the best pasta ever. Simple Pleasures, once a Parkersburg favorite, has moved to 176 Front Street, but still carries the whimsical and elegant home décor that made her a favorite shopping destination.
In Parkersburg, Horner and Harrison sells top quality clothing and accessories for men and women. Wild Birds Unlimited has gifts for the naturalist and those who love their backyard. The new Blennerhassett Gift Shop has an excellent selection of wines, ornaments, candies, teas and kitchenware.
The Too Small Shop has gently used, pre-owned clothing and accessories that look great and are a bargain. The Craft House, on Division Street in South Parkersburg, has baskets and barrels for the garden plus Amish lawn furniture, including gliders. In addition to their fine diamonds, Buttermore’s has very affordable silver and gold jewelry, estate jewelry and gemstones. Linda’s Country Treasures has all kind of wood and handcrafted gifts. Elizabeth Michaels in Vienna has elegant attire and accessories.
Lee Middleton Dolls in Belpre is still looking for good homes for their beautiful baby dolls and Neff’s Loft has charming country décor.
In Charleston, the Dresser has the latest styles and fashions. The Consignment Company is a resale shop with designer clothing in perfect condition that any best friend would love. On Bridge Road, Geraniums has contemporary clothes and accessories and Eggplant has an artistic array of dining décor and interesting home furnishings. Young Floral has silk and fresh flower arrangements and great gift ideas. The Mole Hole on MacCorkle has whimsical specialties and delightful gifts.
In Teays Valley, Plantation Corner offers interior decorations and beautiful ideas. Farrah’s Candles has bright, warm products and gifts for home decorating. The Amish Pantry sells delicious baked goods and food products. The Lamp and Shade Studio in South Charleston, sells designer lamps and hand painted, hand cut and stained glass lamp shades.
Shop online, from Bead Dazzled, www.beaddd.com, for one of a kind hand crafted beaded jewelry or choose from the gift baskets, candles and creations of Sugarbaskets, www.sugarbaskets.com.
This holiday season, think small. Small businesses provide personal gifts, personal attention and genuine appreciation. The mall will always be the shoppers top stop, but holiday purchases can make the difference between a sparkling new year or dark, closed doors for many of the small retails stores that are the reason women love to shop.
