And the Winners Are...

Each year the SBA recognizes successful small business entrepreneurs and small business champions through our Small Business Week activities. The West Virginia District Office is now soliciting nominations for the ten categories which represent the Small Business Week award process. The deadline for submitting nominations to the West Virginia District Office in Clarksburg is Friday,

December 15, 2006. The nomination package can be found on at www.sba.gov/wv under the Spotlight area. Each award winner will be featured in a special insert for The State Journal’s small business issue in May as well as being recognized at the annual awards banquet. State award winners will also be eligible for Regional and National award recognition.

The Small Business Person award is presented to an entrepreneur for developing an outstanding, growing business; innovative products, increasing jobs, increasing sales, overcoming adversity, and community contributions.

The Small Business Exporter award is for a small business owner who has significantly increased export sales and profits, encouraged other firms to export, increased jobs through exporting, and innovative methods of creating markets.

SBA Young Entrepreneur candidates own their own business and must not have reached the age of 30 by June 1, 2007 to be eligible and must have evidence of three year success in sales, profits, increased jobs, innovative products and demonstrated entrepreneurial potential.

The Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Small Business award is for family owned and operated business which have been passed from one generation to another. Nominees must also serve as a majority owner and operator or bear principal responsibility for operating a small business with at least a 15-year track record.

The six Small Business Champion Awards are presented to individuals who promote small business, volunteer time and services to small business interest groups, advocate the cause of small business through legislation, or use their professional expertise to assist small business owners. Advocates may or may not be small business owners.

The Minority Small Business Champion advances business ownership for minorities and fulfills a commitment to supporting minority entrepreneurial development.

Women in Business Champions are individuals who have fulfilled a commitment to the advancement of women’s business ownership and Veteran Small Business Champions have fulfilled a commitment to advancing business opportunities for veterans of the U.S. armed forces.

A Home-based Business Champion has experienced the rewards and difficulties of home-based businesses and dedicated volunteer efforts to improve the climate for other home based businesses. Financial Services Champion are nominated for assisting small business owners in obtaining financing, either directly or through advocacy efforts to increase the availability of financial services.

The Small Business Journalist is recognized for publicizing small business issues or promoting small business programs or success stories. Journalists representing television, radio, electronic, or print media may be nominated.

These awards are an opportunity to recognize outstanding leaders in the small business community.
