After thirty years of doing hair, Sue McCloy can offer a new, nonsurgical solution to the disturbing dilemma of hair loss. She has opened a new studio that specializes in hair replacement for women and men using a technique called Permagraft. Sue says the painless procedure offers a welcome alternative to surgical implants which can cost thousands of dollars. “The Permagraft process is completely non-invasive, totally painless.” It is also completely predictable, unlike results of hair transplants, prescription medicines or topical applications. “When clients decide this is the right procedure for them, they don’t have to wait for anything to grow in. They leave after their first appointment with hair that looks good and looks natural.”

According to Sue, “Hair loss is generally caused by heredity, hormones or aging. In men, common balding is called male pattern baldness and results in a familiar horseshoe-shaped fringe of hair. In women, hair loss usually takes the form of thinning in the front and on top. Men’s hair loss may receive more publicity but about 20% of all women suffer from hair loss, too.”

Sue opened her new location on 19th Street in Parkersburg away from her existing beauty salon to ensure privacy for her clients. “Hair loss is a very personal matter, for women and for men. Everyone is entitled to privacy, whether are having a procedure completed or simply inquiring about their options.” During her free consultation, Sue shows a video of the procedure, answers questions fully and shows clients the natural hair graft that will be used.

Since Permagraft isn’t a surgical procedure, it doesn’t require a physician to administer, but it is unlike conventional hair replacement processes, so only someone certified in the procedure is allowed to perform it. Sue completed her training in Florida, but spent almost a year researching the different kinds of grafts and practicing the technique. “I had to know for myself what worked the best.”

The Permagraft is made from human hair and implanted onto a special material which allows the scalp to be visible through the hair. Hair is implanted on a vertical bias so that it has natural movement and the bounce of growing hair. Sue says, “The graft replicates the growth pattern and density of natural hair, allowing each individual hair to fall under its own weight, just like naturally occurring hair.” Surgical adhesive adheres the Permagraft directly to the scalp, which has been carefully prepared.

Sue carefully assesses each individual for the right hairline and most flattering styles. She makes a head mold to assure proper shaping of the graft. Customers select from over 150 color swatches. The initial application takes about three hours, Sue says. “It takes a lot of time and attention to do the blending properly.” Monthly service involves the removal and reapplication of the graft, which generally takes about half that time.

Sue says the problem of hair loss with women and men has been always been an important issue. She has helped cover the problem with certain cuts and styles or added hair extensions to make hair look fuller.

“People have a lot of questions about what is available to slow or prevent common baldness for men and loss of hair for women.” She often answers questions about non-prescription Rogaine®, the liquid applied to the scalp for men or women and Propecia®, the pill for men only that requires a prescription. “It may take 6 months before you can tell if they’re working.”

Most often, Sue says, “Some men just start wearing a baseball cap all the time. Women will wear try hairpieces and wigs. This is much better. Clients can swim and wash their hair. I do recommend special products to keep the hair in good shape, but I give everyone a year of products free just to make sure they use them!”

The cost for the initial procedure and three maintenance sessions is less than $800. Sue says, “With monthly service, no one can tell hair isn’t growing naturally.” Now when customers express despair over their hair loss, Sue can give offer them something better than a hat or a wig. She can give them hair.
