Bloom and Grow with Class

The Wood County Master Gardener Class still has openings for the 2006 class beginning March 2, 206 at the Vienna Public Library. The annual ten-week class offers a wealth of growing information for new or experienced gardeners. Course topics include basic botany, plant propagation, pesticides, plant diseases, soils and fertilizers, perennials, fruit and other horticultural topics. Students are encouraged to ask questions, submit soil samples for testing and share their gardening experiences with the class.

Suzanne Watson, President of the Wood County Master Gardeners says, “The class is open to anyone, but to become a certified Master Gardener, in the year after completing the course, graduates give back 30 hours of volunteer work toward community education or beautification. Every year after that, Master Gardeners volunteer for twelve hours and take six hours of continuing education. The Master Gardener Association is a service and education organization created to increase and share horticultural knowledge in the community. Master Gardeners learn while they help friends and neighbors with their gardens and flowers.”

There are over 900 active Master Gardeners in the 33 WV counties that have established Master Gardener programs. The local groups often have long-term special projects as well as their educational activities, providing plant answers and assistance throughout the community. Wood County Master Gardeners are reclaiming and replanting the Edison School arboretum as their project.

The Master Gardener course is $80, which includes the extensive WVU manual and thirty hours of instruction. All ten classes will be held on Thursday nightsm from 6:30-9:30.

Call the WVU extension office, 304-424-1960 for an application or more information. For more information about the Edison Arboretum project, please contact Wood County Master Gardener, Judy White, 863-8352.
