Pantyhose Planter
Getting plants to grow on a steep and rocky hillside can be a challenge, but pantyhose planting bags can run to the rescue.
To make pantyhose planters, cut the legs from old pantyhose and fill them with a mixture of peat moss, vermiculite, compost and topsoil. An easy way to fill the pantyhose is to make a funnel by cutting the bottom out of a three pound coffee can. Just push the can into the leg and roll the hose down around it. Pull the can up and keep filling until the stocking is full of soil, then tie a knot in the end.
The result is a soil bag about four feet long and eight inches in diameter. Make enough to cover the planned area. “Pin” them on the hillside with bent coat hangers and cut holes through the nylon for plants. For aesthetic reasons, gardeners may choose to cover the planting bags with mulch or straw. Ultimately, roots will grow through the planting bags and into the hillside, holding everything in place.
