Grow Wild at the Plant Sale

Come rain or shine, the annual plant sale of the Kanawha County Master Gardener Association and Friends of Kanawha County Parks, Inc will be held Saturday, May 20, from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. in the Schoenbaum Amphitheater at Coonskin Park.

Perennials, annuals, herbs, and shrubs will be offered at reasonable prices during the fund raising event. Plants for container gardening, sun and shade, butterfly and water gardening, woodland settings, and rock gardens will be featured.

Some of the herbs and vegetables gardeners may select include Basil, Parsley, Cilantro, Dill and Stevia. A variety of tomato types will be available -bush, grape, cherry, heirloom,WV 63 and Roma. Unusual peppers and eggplants will also be for sale.

A variety of bulbs can be chosen, including Iris and Tulips, and Carolina Whorton, White Christmas and Gingerland Caladiums.

The Plant Boutique, showcasing unusual plants for container gardening, is new for 2006 Some of the plants available will be ornamental millet (Joseph of Bright Color and purple), Easter Egg Plant, salvia, and zinnia. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

Educational materials will be available on water and butterfly gardening, composting, soil testing, and other gardening topics. Short informational talks on container, watering, butterfly gardening and gardening with deer will be featured from 11:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M., in addition to information about the Master Gardener program.

The Master Gardener program is a volunteer educational program of the West Virginia University Extension Service. Proceeds from the sale will support community projects for the Kanawha County Master Gardeners and Friends of Kanawha County Parks.
