Greening of America
If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, homeowners seem perfectly happy to water, aerate, fertilize, landscape, and do whatever it takes to meet the competition. That includes hiring landscape consultants and lawn care companies. According to the Professional Landcare Network, a growing number of homeowners are seeking out professionals to care for their lawns and landscapes.
With more than 30 million acres of lawns across the US, that’s a lot of green.
Information from a national survey in 2004 showed that homeowners spent $11.6 billion on their lawns the previous year, which was up 12 percent from the year before. The same homeowners projected that they’d spend even more on their lawns in the coming year. Consumers realize that healthy lawns play an important role in home sales and they have a huge impact on “curb appeal.” Realtors report that homes with beautiful lawns and landscapes can increase property values by 15 to 20 percent, and that homeowners can realize returns on their investment of 100 to 200 percent.
The green is reflected in many ways beyond property lines. Lawn care companies provide a large number of jobs across the US, career opportunities in landscape architecture are expanding and new areas of expertise, like the EPA’s recently created WaterSense certification for contractors trained in water efficiency, are contributing to the growth of local economies as well as the beautification of neighborhoods.
