The Deer-est Plants
In many areas, even the kindest-hearted gardeners can develop anger management issues with the deer. Deer just aren’t willing to distinguish between weeds or wild flowers and exotic, expensive or well loved plantings.
There are hopeful lists of deer resistant plants, generally including heavily textured or heavily scented plants, like lambs ear or lantana.
Most of the time, though, deer are partial to the same plants most gardeners favor.
Deer, like gardeners, are prone to enjoy roses and impatiens. Animals of good taste, they like tulips and taxus and Phlox paniculata. Hostas are a gardener’s best friend and a deer perennial favorite.
Euonymus and rhododendron that add color and beautiful foliage to any yard, are Bambi’s favorite shrubs, too.
Arborvitae and white pine are the evergreens deer like best. And, deer love to graze on day lilies of every size, color and shape.
In truth, hungry deer will eat just about anything, sometimes including the planters and the bird feeders. But gardener’s who plan to make certain deer feel welcome, can also plant sedum, oakleaf hydrangea and scabiosa. It’s an almost impossible task to keep deer away from gardens but a gardener who plants for deer is bound to be successful!
