Late Bloomers
It may be late, but there’s still time to plant bulbs. Gardeners are more sensitive to the cold than many bulbs. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, bulbs can be planted until January. And, many are on sale, but obscured by all the Christmas decorations.
Be sure to plant only what are called “hardy” bulbs, those bulbs that will survive the Mid Ohio Valley winter months. Be sure to check the label to confirm, or talk with the local extension agent.
Select a well-drained, sunny location for planting. Smaller bulbs often look their best when planted in groups of a dozen or more per square foot for drifts of color. Larger bulbs may be planted in lesser quantities. Spade about twelve inches of soil until it is workable and crumbly in texture. If the soil is clay, add a soil amendment or compost.
Always plant the bulbs three times the height of the bulb deep, with the growing tip pointed up. After planting, top dress with a 5-10-10 fertilizer and water the bulbs in. Then, sit down by the fire and warm up with a nice cup of herbal tea!
