Houseplants

Houseplants are not only beautiful to look at, but they make the air in our homes healthier. Many people think that houseplants require a great deal of care and don’t want to bother with them. There are, however, some types of houseplants that require very little care.

Here are a few houseplants that you may want to try: African Violet, Begonias, Bromeliads, Christmas Cactus, and Peace Lily.

Some common signs of trouble in houseplants is wilting or partial wilting of the leaves. Normally this is caused by improper water. To check the soil dampness, press your finger up to the first knuckle into the soil. If the soil is dry to this depth, the plant needs watering. If the soil is wet, the problem may be too much water causing the roots to become saturated. Over watered plants should be repotted into fresh soil.

If your houseplant has a sudden loss of leaves, it is normally caused by rapid temperature change. It may be caused by prolonged hot or cold drafts, dry air, or changing the location of the plant from a sunny room to a dark room. Try moving your houseplant and see if the problem corrects itself.

If you see yellowing leaves, it may indicate a nutritional deficiency. First apply a nitrogen fertilize and wait 3-4 days to see if it resolves the problem. Yellowing leaves can be a sign of soil fungi or severe infestations of mites or aphids. Look at your plant to see if you can detect any types of infestations.
Small pale and spindly leaves are a common sign of insufficient light. Try moving your plant to a more sunny location.

Houseplants can be fun and a health benefit in your home. Try one of these easy care houseplants as a starter into having beautiful houseplants in your home year-round.
