Sons and Love
By Carolyn Escandon
What can a Mom say to a teen age boy about Valentines Day?
It is a popular opinion advocated frequently by males, that Valentines Day is a rip off, and created by card and candy companies to make money.
However, mothers can take Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to take a closer look about what may make the day special to many, and perhaps, allow for some learning about life, love and the responsibilities of being a man.
On Valentine’s Day one should acknowledge and honor the people one loves.
On Valentine’s Day, it is appropriate for a man to open his heart and express feelings of love
On Valentine’s Day it is proper for a man to speak and write of emotions valued and felt.
On Valentine’s Day, it is acceptable to acknowledge the wonder of how it feels to receive, as well as give, expressions of love.
On Valentine’s Day, it is wonderful to pay attention to the ones who are important to us and to receive their attention in return.
Valentine’s Day is only a rip-off if the cards, flowers or gifts are a perfunctory response with no value, and no meaning, to the one who is giving them. Practice may not make perfect, but boys who have experience sharing their lives and their feelings become stronger, better men. Boys who honor women, who practice opening their hearts and expressing their emotions, who know how it feels to give and receive love, are well on their way to becoming a man that will make a mother proud.
