Organic Cotton Baby Clothing

Babies are our most precious gifts.   Every new parent wants to be the best parent they can be.   Parents want to provide a safe and loving home for their baby.   And part of this safety is avoiding any and all toxins as much as   possible.

One area that most parents don't think anything about is baby clothes.   Often, baby clothing is made of cotton.   But, unfortunately, not all cotton is safe for our precious little ones.

There are two kinds of cotton - organic cotton and conventional cotton.   Conventional cotton is one of the most toxic crops in the world.   Conventional cotton farming uses very heavy amounts of pesticides and herbicides to protect their crops.   When the cotton is weaved into fabric, chlorine bleach is used to give the cotton a clean white color.   After being rinsed in chlorine bleach, formaldehyde is applied as a finisher.   So the use of conventional cotton for making baby clothing is questionable.

However, organic cotton is different.   First, there are no chemicals used to grow organic cotton.   The cotton fields are fertilized naturally and the weeds are removed with hoes, tractors, or by hand.   Pests are controlled by using pest eating insects.   To have the organic cotton label, the soil must have been free of pesticides for three consecutive years.

Organically grown cotton has the ability to breathe. Baby clothing or bedding that has been manufactured with conventional cotton fabric will trap moisture next to baby's skin which can cause a rash. Many babies have sensitive skin so providing them with more breathable organic clothing and bedding is a simple and effective way for parents to minimize skin irritation.   Clothing made from organic cotton will last much longer than clothing made from conventional cotton. The fibers of organic cotton are much stronger and thicker than the conventional cotton.

Organic cotton baby clothes can be found in various baby boutiques across the country.   If there are no baby boutiques that carry organic cotton clothing in your area, then access the internet for stores that do.
