Sunny Service for Summer
Summer is a good time for moms to connect with the kids and their community, and a perfect time to do both.
There are children, senior citizens and dozens of non-profit organizations that could benefit from the helpful efforts of a dynamic duo, trio or family quartet.
Adopt a lawn! Volunteer to mow a lawn and weed for a senior citizen during the growing season, from now until October. Offer to weed, water and tend the garden of a nonprofit agency or organization for the season. Let the kids identify plants with markers showing the common and scientific names. Contact the local Master Gardeners and see what project needs volunteers. Kids and dirt go hand in hand.
Offer to read aloud to seniors with vision problems or at a nursing home. It’s a great way to practice reading for kids and something different and fresh for their audience. Or, be a literacy volunteer, for a child or an adult.
Foster a pet. Foster pet parents can take a pet for a night, a weekend, a week or until the pet finds a permanent home. The Humane Society is always looking for foster parents who can keep an animal that is waiting to be transported to a new home.
Be the driver. Pets are often transported to shelters in other parts of the state or other parts of the country. Drivers are always needed to get them there safely.
If artistry and creativity run in the family genes, volunteer to help with art education programs, decorate a nonprofit event, teach a class, give a demonstration, help hang an exhibit or contribute to the newsletter.
Handy guys and gals can teach classes with their apprentice, perhaps on small appliance repair or how to upholster.
Become a hospice volunteer by making friendly visits to patients and provide respite for caregivers by doing light housework, running errands, preparing meals, and being a caring listener.
Be an office volunteer for a nonprofit agency and help with special events, community education, or fundraising. A variety of volunteer activities exist to fit any schedule. There’s a non-profit organization doing something that would be interesting and beneficial every day. Parents who share community services with their children are doing good work with a lifetime of return. It's an opportunity not to miss.
For ideas on how to get connected or to offer donated goods, visit www.vacmov.org and click the “VolunteerWV!” button, call a favorite non profit or arts organization directly or, in Wood County, call Sandy Tharp at the Volunteer Action Center at 424-3457 Ext. 104.
