Art, Animation, Instrumentation and Penmanship
Kanawha County Public Library system is offering a variety of free summer programs for children.
Kids from grades 2-6 can practice the Art of Origami and with a square of paper and a few folds in the right places, create a wondrous creature. The hands-on program will be offered at the Dunbar Branch Library (766-7161): July 18, 5:30 p.m., at the Nitro Library (755-4432): July 10, 5:30 p.m. And at the St. Albans Branch Library (722-4244): June 27, 6 p.m.
Local artists will lead introductory art classes kids K-6 during Hands-On Art. Presenters are members of the Charleston Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, an organization of women engaged in original creative work of professional standard in Visual Arts, Literary Works and Music. The program will be offered at the Clendenin Branch Library (548-6370): July 13, 6 p.m., at Cross Lanes Branch Library (776-5999): Thursday, July 6, 6 p.m. And at the Elk Valley Branch Library (965-3636): Thursday, June 29, 6 p.m.
Children from grades 4-6 will learn the basics of calligraphy with members of the Kanawha Calligrapher’s Guild in Art-Rageous Writing. Pens and papers will be supplied. The class will be held at the St. Albans Branch Library (722-4244): July 6, 10:30 a.m.
All ages are invited to the Instrument Petting Zoo for a close encounter with a brass instrument and the chance to get up close and personal with a woodwind. Vince Gorby of Gorby’s Music in South Charleston will brings a “petting zoo” full of instruments for kids to examine and try playing. Contact the Marmet Branch Library (949-6628) for the class on July 7, 10:30 a.m., or the Sissonville Branch Library (984-2244) for July 6, 1 p.m.
Jamie Cope of Destiny Images will demonstrate how animators bring designs to life in Art-Rageous Writing for all ages. The animation sessions will be held at the Main Library in Charleston (343-4646): July 11, 2 p.m., and at the Glasgow Branch Library (595-3131): July 11, 10:30 a.m.
Registration is required for all sessions. Please call the hosting library to register.
