Back to $chool
This year, the average family will spend $527.08 to send their kids back to school. Total spending is expected to reach well over $17 billion according to the National Retail Federation. Spending on electronics and computer-related equipment is expected to fuel this year’s growth, increasing more than $1.5 billion over last year.
Fortunately, the new faster, sleeker computers and printers are also less expensive than previous models. Refurbished models offer outstanding value, especially for second or third generation computers. Wireless dorms make them simpler to install at low prices.
Flat screen technology has pushed prices down, so it’s not a stretch to consider flat screen TVs for college bound students. Some 15-inch models with DVD players are under $400 and 20-inch without DVD can be under $300.
Studying is thirsty, hard work, so returning students are bringing mini refrigerators and vintage style Pepsi vending machines for their rooms. Gas prices are high and parking is so hard to find, it’s easier to stay put. Many students will furnish their rooms with portable grills, smoothie makers and blenders.
For the smallest students, colored markers and cheerful backpacks still make the grade. But parents of kids in middle school and up may find MP3 players, and especially the Apple iPod, have become practically prerequisites for class.
