Top Five Time Management Mistakes
According to Dr. Donald E. Wetmore of the Productivity Institute, the top five time management mistakes are:
Mistake 1: Start your day without a plan of action. You will begin your day by responding to the loudest voice and spend it responding to other people’s need. Others will take all of your time, if you let them.
Mistake 2: Get out of balance in your life. Our lives have seven vital areas: Health, Family, Financial, Intellectual, Social, Professional, and Spiritual. We won’t spend time every day in each area. If we spend a sufficient quantity and quality of time in each area, our lives will be in balance. If we neglect any one area, or two or three, we will eventually sabotage our success.
Mistake 3: Work with a messy desk or work area. The person who works with a messy desk spends about 1 1⁄2 hours per day looking for things. That’s seven 7 1⁄2 hours per week. A minute here and there like a leaky faucet, drips, drips, drips. Typically top managers work with a clean desk.
Mistake 4: Don’t get enough sleep. Nearly 75% of us complain that we are tired. Most people get the quantity of sleep, but not the quality. Days are filled with so much stress, things get out of control, we work harder but maybe not smarter and with all of this it’s difficult to get a full night’s sleep.
Mistake 5: Don’t take a lunch break. Many people work through lunch hoping they’ll get more done. After working for several hours, we start to “dull out”. A lunch break, even for fifteen minutes, gives us a chance to get our batteries charged again to be more efficient to handle the afternoon’s challenges.
