Abuse in Common
Animal abuse is appalling but it can also be an indicator of other serious family problems. According to research cited by the ASPCA, animal abuse was found in 88% of those families in which there was child abuse. Fifty of the largest shelters for battered women in the United States found that 85% of women and 63% of children entering the shelters discussed incidents of pet abuse in the family. Some women will not leave their abusive spouse or partner because they fear for the life of the companion animal they would leave behind. Additionally, a strong link has been documented between those who abuse elders, generally their caretakers, and abuse of the elder’s companion pet.
The ASPCA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has embarked on a mission to promote awareness of the link between animal cruelty and human violence and to get legislation passed that recognizes animal cruelty charges in the same light as domestic abuse crimes. In addition to anti-cruelty initiatives and training, the ASPCA has a new initiative, to protect both animals and families from abuse and provide greater insight to the link between the two all-too-common types of abuse.
