A Pet's View / July 2005

A Sure Thing

By Pat Lawrence

The amount of money Americans spent on pampering products for pets has surpassed $35 billion a year, a rise that parallels that of direct sales revenues which reached $30 billion in the US last year. So, perhaps it isn’t surprising that a new company featuring pet products and accessories sold at home parties is a booming success. Shure Pets signed its 500th certified Pet Consultant in the nation during the first week of June. Two weeks later, the number had reached 600 and the company unleashed a fifty per cent increase in product line.

> Included in that number are pet consultants in Ellenboro, Durbin and Kearneysville, WV and Susan Kuhn in Marietta, Ohio. A pet lover already accustomed to working out of her home, Susan read an article about Shure Pets and promptly sent in her application. “It’s perfect match for me. I’ve already had three parties, and we’re planning a party as a fundraiser to benefit breast cancer research.” Susan’s Pamper Your Pet Bakery makes and markets specialty treats and pet birthday cakes on-line and at the Marietta Farmers Market.

Officially launched in late 2003, Shure Pets is growing by the proverbial leaps and bounds. Pet lovers and owners are introduced to fun, unique health and beauty aids, gifts, treats, toys and apparel through the company’s signature “Pupperware Parties”.

Pets, naturally, are welcome. Susan plans on including her two year old Sheltie and long-haired, chihuahua-Pomeranian mix.

In addition to treats, toys and an established line of proprietary shampoos, conditioners, and vitamins, the Shure Pets Cat-alog offers exclusive attire and jewelry for fashionable animals and owners.

The new products are unabashedly directed at the soft spot pet owners bear for their furred and feathered friends. Loving pet owners can’t resist Pup-Corn, a fresh popped, tasty treat in flavors for cats and dogs or the Ulti-Mutt candy bar made of dog-safe carob.

Understanding that pet owners often take better care of their pets than themselves, Shure Pets offers comfort measures for concerned pet parents. Paw Balm will soothe and condition sore, tired paws and Boo-Boo Bandage quickly stops pet bleeding from minor cuts or nail clippings, providing an invisible sealing bandage for speedy recovery.

Devine Canine and Feline Breathe Drops, added to dogs and cats food daily, address the embarrassing social stigma of bad breath.

> Shure Pet founder Andrew Shure says he started the company “on a wing and a paw.” “All Shure Pets products are created and approved by knowledgeable scientists and veterinary representatives,” he says. “The consultants are certified animal lovers. By socializing with other pet lovers and bringing products straight to the home, Shure Pet Consultants offer pet lovers everywhere a special, fun alternative for pampering their precious pets.”

The company doesn’t actively recruit consultants, but is glad to welcome pet lovers who wish to work with Shure Pets. They are also pleased that the word is spreading so quickly. Pet Consultants, like consultants for Pampered Chef, Party Lite, Tupperware, and other direct selling models, are encouraged to invite friends and likely candidates on board.

According to Shure, “The majority of Pet Consultants are women -from 22 to 75. It’s a great way to make some great money working with all kinds of furry friends, but it’s also a great way to stay active and be social, in the neighborhood and beyond. Pets are a very personal matter, so buying for them is very personal, too. Direct sales gives consumers a chance to handle, see, and ask questions about the products, with their pet present, making it a very enjoyable experience for all.”

Shure Pet’s new products have expanded their appeal with products and accessories for a broader variety of pets, including birds, ferrets and horses. Andrew Shure says, “Besides the tail wagging fun”, there are many advantages to becoming a Shure Pet Consultant. “The joy of helping others, pride in achievement, and getting to buy products for your own pets at a discount!”
