At the Shelter

The Kanawha/Charleston Humane Association is taking bids to repair the damage from the summer flood that washed away the parking lot, the fence, the driveway along the shelter and a nice grassy area that has become topsoil somewhere far away. The estimated cost for the repairs is $150,000. Cash donations are the best contribution. Since the rains came down in the day, all animals got upstairs in time, so no animals were lost. The county contributed $25,000 so they could keep the doors open, and the City of Charleston worked for four days helping get things back in order.

Fortunately, the building is fine and the shelter is open, with 150-160 safe, dry, animals. Visitors should know that it’s one way in and one way out driving into the shelter.

All the items being collected for the planned yard sale were washed away, but the event is only postponed, not cancelled. New items will be gladly accepted and the sale will be rescheduled.

The Humane Society of Parkersburg had a successful offsite adoptathon at Grand Central Mall. Director Cindy Mowry says, “The mall loved it, the animals loved it, and twenty animals found new homes.” They are looking forward to another Grand Central adoptathon and also considering other sites that might be suitable for matchmaking. HSOP is gearing up for their Fall Expo and a special pet presentation at Femme Fair in October.  Basket Bingo will soon be back by popular request. Last year’s event cleared $3600. This year they are looking for corporate or private assistance in purchasing the baskets.

One Parkersburg “pound puppy” proved herself a heroic crime fighter. Lucy was adopted at this summer’s Walk Your Paws fundraiser. She started barking at 1:30 in the morning, pacing back and forth in front of a kitchen window door that lead to the back porch deck. The young woman rose to see what was wrong and discovered an intruder trying to break into the bathroom window. Good Dog, Lucy!

The Humane Society of Parkersburg, at the corner of 29th and Poplar off Murdoch Avenue, is open Monday through Friday from 10-5 and Saturday from 10-4. Ph. 304-422-5541.

The Kanawha/Charleston Humane Association, 1248 Greenbriar Street, is open 7 days a week, Monday through Saturday from 12-6 and on Sunday 12-5. Ph. 304-342-1576
