Cavia porcellus, better known as guinea pigs, are often an ideal
family pet. They don’t need to be walked even once a day. They
can be left alone for hours safely. Unlike cats, they don’t
threaten the local bird population. Unlike hamsters, they don’t
sleep all day.
They stay indoors and eat very little. They need a LOT less hay in
their habitat than a horse.
Unlike snakes or reptiles, they don’t need extra heat or light. Guinea
pigs don’t bark, chirp, sing or scream. (They do, however, squeak.) Unlike
fish, they can be handled and cuddled. They don’t need regular
veterinary attention or expensive upkeep. They don’t require
constant attention and they are vegetarians.
Best of all, guinea pigs usually live just 3-6 years, so parents
rarely have to assume responsibility after the kids go off to
college.
