News From the Shelter

Although ‘pound puppies’ can be a curious blend of breed features, charming characteristics or unusual markings, about one out of every four animals in shelters nationwide are purebred animals. Like all the creatures that come to the shelter, purebreds arrive as puppies, as adults and as seniors, in perfect health or with special needs. Their circumstances are as varied as their breeds.

Prospective pet owners that have a particular breed in mind, can register their preference, including gender, age, or size, with the Humane Society of Parkersburg. They will be called when an animal comes in matching those requests. Director Cindy Mowry says, “People who live in apartments may be allowed to have an animal that is only up to a certain weight. Some people just have a preference for a certain breed. We have taken in almost every major breed from boxers and Labrador retrievers to shih-tsus and poodles – and even Chihuahuas. Whatever the preference, if it means a home for the animal, we are happy to help arrange it.”

Santa’s pet photos will be taken November 22, from 10-4 and November 23, from 12-5 in Parkersburg. The cost is $15 for two pictures. The shelter will host Home for the Holidays, an adoptathon to find pets for homeless animals, on December 12. There will be a choir and refreshments to encourage visitors to take a pet home to share the holiday season.

The Big Fix in Kanawha County will kick off November 5, with cat neuters available for $15 for Kanawha County residents. Pet owners should call ahead and make an appointment with the vet of their choice. Each hospital will perform 50 neuters. The Big Fix continues with dog neuters on December 3 for $30. Each hospital will perform twenty surgeries. On January 7, cats can be spayed for $30. Each hospital will accept twenty-five female cats. Female dogs will be spayed for $45 on February 11, twenty per hospital.
