Mountain Stage

Few things brighten the heart and lighten the spirit like live music. Fortunately, West Virginians have ready access to a remarkable quantity and quality of wonderful musicians practically at their back door.  Mountain Stage performances are a stellar example of the beautiful sounds that abound here.

Listeners can enjoy performances by an array of accomplished artists from all across the country, usually for just $8-$15.  Famous performers like Joan Baez and Kathy Mattea share the stage with up and coming musicians, well-loved local groups and new talent. Larry Groce, the show’s host and emcee, says 95% of the acts featured can't be heard on local radio stations.

The live shows from the theatre at the Cultural Center Theater are taped and aired on radio and television stations all over the US.  Each two-hour program features four or five guests and each guest performs 3-6 songs.  They also air about six road shows each year.  This past year they held Mountain Stage in Huntington, Charlestown, Fairmont, Franklin and Montgomery. Groce says, “Mountain Stage blends studio quality with live performance before a theater audience.  We sell out about half the time. It’s too bad every show isn’t a full house, but we found out long ago that when you live in a small town and do 26 shows a year, they won't all be sell outs.  It's always great to have an excited full house to rev up the performers, but our audiences are very responsive no matter what their size.” The broadcast audience on radio is over 200,00 per week.

Brad Paisley, Suzy Boggess, Johnny Staats & Robert Shafer, Joan Armatrading, Loudon Wainwright III, Asleep at the Wheel, Joe Ely, Acoustic Syndicate, Austin Lounge Lizards, Soozie Tyrell, Samite of Uganda and The Fairfield Four are some of the extraordinary performers who have entertained listeners at Mountain Stage.
