Live in Love

Researchers at the University of Denver’s Center for Marital and Family Studies have discovered  that couples who live together before getting engaged or married incur a heightened risk of marital distress. In addition, men’s commitment levels vary based on when couples move in together, says Galena Kline, Kline, M.A., the principal director of the new DU study.

The Center now is gearing up for an in-depth look at the issue to examine why couples live together and what they experience. Women who are living with their partner or thinking about living with their partner are invited to participate in a new study on cohabitation.

Galena says,  “Even though close to 70 percent of couples in the United States will live together before marriage, we know very little about the beginning stages of this experience for partners.  We want to find out about why people choose to live together and what that experience is like for people. Because we are most interested in learning from those who have recently made this decision, or might be about to, we are seeking couples who have recently begun living together or who will be moving in together soon.”

She says 150 couples of various ages will be chosen from across the country to participate in the next few months. Participants will be asked to answer questions about their relationship and themselves at three points in time via mail. “For each set of questionnaires completed, participants will have a chance to win $50.  The results will be published two years from now, in professional journals as well as publications like A Woman’s View.  We hope that the results we obtain can ultimately help couples make choices about when to live together.”
