Electronic
Tools for Working Women
By David P. Bell, Ph.D.
For anyone wondering if there is a place to find career information
for a child, a spouse or themselves, looking for a service to find new
employees or interested in the market rate for a given job, the answer
may be at www.CareerOneStop.org
The website is a suite of electronic workforce tools to serve multiple
needs for today’s busy woman. There are four primary tracks of
information: for the woman who needs to locate training resources; for
the employer who needs market information or new employees; for the
job applicant who needs information on jobs, salaries, trends, and careers;
and for the workforce professional who needs a source of unbiased current
information on the labor market.
The portal features multiple career-related services, logical navigation
of a wealth of information, and connects “clicks and bricks”,
a value added service not offered by other online career sites. The
portal houses the America’s Job Bank (AJB), CareerInfo Net, America’s
Service Locator (ASL) and Workforce Tools of the Trade (WTT). The suite
of services is provided by the US Department of Labor (DOL) and is provided
without charge to users. It is growing in use and size. For example
last year the average number of open jobs available was 928,038 per
day. This year the average is 1,078,421 jobs per/day. Similarly the
resumes available on an average day last year numbered 436,339, this
year 577,106. Last year there were 292,955 registered employers at the
end of the period, this year 304,389. There were 4,567,111 registered
job seekers at the end of the period this year.
One of the links associated with the www.CareerOneStop.org includes
O*NET™ that provides a number of work related tools. For example
an individual can enter a series of skills and match it to careers.
Or a job description writer can help create a job description. O*NET™
also provides access to state level wage and trend information. For
example, one can find the current wages for a specific job and take
a look at the ten-year trend for that job. It is a great source of information
for the junior high school student who would like to know the employment
prospects for a job ten years from now.
This source of current information is conveniently organized for the
woman employer, mother, job seeker, and student to find reliable, creditable,
current information about jobs, openings, trends, training and more.
All that is needed is an Internet connection. For information seekers
without computer access, a trip to the library can save the day. The
libraries in WV have Internet access to high-speed T1 lines. Also, the
Workforce Investment One Stop Offices have Internet access open to job
seekers and/or employers.
