One-of-a-Kind Designer Cakes for Mother's Day

There is never a dull moment in the life of Asunta Damron, owner of My Favorite Things, located in Marietta, OH and Vienna, WV. Her journey as a female business owner is ever learning and ever filled to the brim with excitement. When you talk with her, you can feel the happiness in her heart that makes everyone she touches a much better person. Her delight is in making people feel special.
Asunta’s latest endeavor is of the sugary sweet kind. She just returned from a rigorous two week course at the Wilton School of Cake Decoration and Confectionery Art in Darien, IL. Asunta received her diploma in their Master’s level course of cake decorating. She also completed courses and is certified in chocolates, rolled fondant, gum paste and sugar artistry. Participants, from all over the world, train at Wilton’s highly recognized culinary institute. “The two weeks I was there, I worked with others from Canada, Singapore, Turkey, Yugoslavia, China, Mexico, Thailand and Czechoslovakia,” she commented.
“We’ve been baking the entire sixteen years we’ve been in business. My Favorite Things is well known for our delightful signature cookies. It was unfortunate when Brownies closed, but it opened the door for us to expand our bakery line. I had basic Wilton cake decorating classes years ago and have always wanted to do more of the classes. One thing led to another and now I’m a certified Wilton instructor!”
“As I share my enthusiasm for the cake decorating, I have had so many people tell me that they’d like to learn cake decorating, so I got the idea of teaching classes. Beginning the end of April we will offer basic cake decorating classes at the store. Classes are limited to six persons, so each participant receives hands on training and personal attention. The 2 hour classes will be held for 4 weeks. Anyone interested in learning the art of cake decorating can call or stop in at My Favorite Things and register for the classes.”
In addition, My Favorite Things carries the Wilton line of cake decorating pans and accessories. “When the latest order arrives we will have over 40 designs.
We’ll be able to do everything from a dancing daisy, a standing bear, turtle, race car, sports figures to dinosaurs and pirate ships. Ask, and chances are we’ll be able to come up with it for you.”
As Mother’s Day approaches, Asunta says one of the hottest cakes she will be creating is the Daisy for Mom. Each item will have Asunta’s special touch, as she likes to take time to talk with each person ordering cakes. All cakes, like our cookies, are baked from scratch. She then customizes the cake design for the person and/or occasion and is getting rave reviews.
Not stopping at designer cakes, Asunta is also doing personalized wedding cakes that can be theme oriented. So, if anyone is looking for that “special” wedding cake that your guests will talk about for years to come, you need to call ahead now and get on Asunta’s wedding cake list.
My Favorite Things is also working on a very Special Event Celebration on June 28th, to mark the 30th anniversary of the date Lee Middleton began sculpting dolls. Lee’s daughter, Brynn Middleton Riordan (a celebrated sculptor in her own right) has designed and sculpted a special “Baby Lee” doll for the celebration. “Baby Lee” is limited to 30 dolls and will only be available at My Favorite Things. “We’ll keep everyone updated on the festivities, just keep June 28th open on your calendar,” she smiled with great excitement.
