Standing Behind Her Female Clients

Ellen SmithEllen Smith

Ellen Smith is a divorce attorney who fights for her clients with compassion and legal finesse. Ellen, a native of Parkersburg, has been a trial lawyer for more than fifteen years. Ellen graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude from Marietta College in 1988.  She then graduated from West Virginia University College of Law in 1992 and was a member of the West Virginia Law Review.

After graduating from law school, she worked for many years at large, corporate law firms where she represented individuals, as well as corporations, in a variety of legal matters. When asked why she has become a divorce attorney, Ellen responds “because people, and in particular, women, need a lawyer who is not only an advocate for them, but who also truly cares about them and their children.” Ellen Smith appears to be the whole package in that regard.  Ellen finds that “many clients initially appear embarrassed and ashamed when their dream of ‘happily ever after’ doesn’t come true. Women frequently recall the big wedding, the happy honeymoon and the first few years of marriage and then wonder what happened after that.” Ellen and her staff understand how these women feel.  Ellen explains that her entire staff displays concern and compassion for her divorce clients.

“My paralegal, Karen Riff le, not only has a vast amount of legal knowledge, she’s worked in the legal profession for more than 25 years, but she also has tremendous empathy for our clients. In addition to needing legal help, divorce clients frequently need someone with whom they can openly talk and we strive to fill that role too.” Although Ellen and her staff are not trained counselors, they understand the emotional turmoil divorce causes. Both Ellen and Karen have been through divorces of their own.

While Ellen obviously enjoys her work as an attorney, she has another job she enjoys even more, being the mother of two children, Emily, nine, and Jackson, two and a half. As a working mom with two young children, Ellen states that she understands quite well the pressures and “ juggling act” all mothers must face. More importantly, Ellen fully understands the importance of protecting children during and after a divorce.

Ellen states that her clients’ primary concern is invariably their children.  Ellen also understands the need to protect her clients’ rights to spend as much time as possible with the children.  Ellen fights vigorously for the rights of her clients to not only spend as much time as possible caring for their children, but also their right to make important decisions regarding them.  In addition to divorce work, Ellen continues to maintain her 15 plus year personal injury practice as well. She states she “enjoys working with her clients” in many different aspects of the law.
