Bandwidth: The range or capacity of frequencies a communications
device can handle.
Broadbrand: Transmission facility in which a wide band of frequencies
is available to transmit information.
Dedicated Internet Access: A dedicated connection to the internet
for sending large files, receiving critical email, or handling high
volume Web traffic.
DSL Internet Access: Digital Subscriber Line. Runs over ordinary
phone lines and provides fast downloads, highspeed access for online
searches, and the ability to quickly send and receive e-mail and data
file attachments.
Firewall: Software program or hardware device that filters information
coming into a private network or computer system through an Internet
connection to help prevent attacks.
IP Address: Internet Protocol. IP address is the unique identifying
number assigned to each machine on the Internet.
ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network. Digital connection providing
data, video, and voice traffic at speeds of 64 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps.
Kbps: Thousand bits per second.
Mbps: Million bits per second.
Wireless LAN: Uses radio waves to transmit data through the air instead
of through wired connections. Gives employees LAN and Internet access
from anywhere in the office without being physically connected.
WAN - Wide Area Network. Data network extending the local area network
outside the building.
Voice Over IP: The transmission of voice information over the Internet.
Private Line T-1: Dedicated and secure connection between two locations
for data, voice, and video applications that works only for your business
- at speeds of 1.5 Mbps.
Web Hosting: Housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more
websites on a server connected to the Internet. Shared Web hosting
allows a business to share serve space, thereby reducing costs associated
with storing websites.
ATM: Asynchronous Transfer Mode. Transport and switching technology
that delivers high-capacity transmission at speeds of 1.5 Mbps to
155 Mbps and supports simultaneous data, voice, and video traffic
over the same infrastructure.
