Let’s talk water leaks. It has been stated that more damage
is done in homes because of water leaks than all tornadoes, hurricanes,
floods, and other storms put together. That is quite a statement!
Most wait until there is a leak before the panic sets in. First
thought is to call a plumber.
Good choice. While waiting for a plumber to arrive, there are things
to do in the meantime. Find the water shut off valve. Either the one
under the sink or the main valve in the basement, under the sidewalk
or wherever it might be. If the water supply line under the sink cannot
be turned off, try the main valve. Depending on the severity of the
leak, turning off the water could save in damage costs.
Here is what to do afterwards or beforehand. Learn where all the
shut-off valves are located including gas lines. Another thing to
do is buy a home improvement book at your local hardware store. These
books contain a little bit of everything a homeowner or renter can
do themselves, and the appropriate tools to have on hand. Fixing the
problem yourself could save a lot of money. If you do hire a plumber,
try to get three estimates, if time permits.
In cold weather, check for split pipes under the home. Split pipes
are caused by freezing water in the line. If the water pressure in
your home suddenly drops, that could be the cause. A temporary patch
can be applied until a permanent one is made.
Once a repair is made, check it the next day to see if the leak has
stopped. Be sure to put a bucket or bowl under the spot where the
drip occurred.
