A Worthwhile Purpose

“My days are very busy raising two children, but what I do with my extra time outside of being a mom and wife is very worthwhile,” says Cristin Palumbo, a member of the Board of Directors of the Covenant House in Charleston, WV. Cristin, the mother of a six year old girl and a three year old boy, not only finds the time to give to a worthwhile cause, but the cause gives back to her in a special way.
“I started volunteering after my children were born to stay connected and to keep from becoming isolated from the outside world, but what I didn’t expect is what I got back in return. I am now really involved in an important undertaking that reaches out and meets the needs of people all around the Charleston area. The Covenant House is truly remarkable in its ongoing daily activities, its volunteers and it business support. I have been really impressed with the other Board members. They are some of the most dedicated people I have ever known,” she explained.
The Covenant House is an organization that has been established for many years that offers direct services for people in need including a drop-in center for those living in homelessness, a clothing closet, and a food pantry. It also provides emergency housing and services for people who are HIV-positive.
“I knew about the Covenant House because it was very active and well publicized in the Charleston community. I was called to serve on the Board when they were looking for someone who had an educational background. Since I had taught high school prior to having my children, I was able to fill the void on the Board,” she said. She added, “The Covenant House raises money for AIDS housing by doing many projects such as the Rainbow Run and reaches out to those in need with its annual food drive.”
According to Cristin, the Covenant House is always in need of new volunteers. Anyone who is interested in volunteering with this much needed and worthwhile cause, call the Volunteer Director at the Covenant House at 304 344 8053. We also are always in need of good used clothing. The clothing can be dropped off at the St. Mark’s Church in downtown Charleston. Other items that are always needed are sample sizes of shampoo, conditioner, and laundry detergent.
The Covenant House is located at 600 Shrewesbury St., Charleston, WV 25301 or by calling (304) 344-8053.
