The Charleston-based women's choir, womanSong Chorale, is recruiting
sopranos and altos to join the group for their 7th season. A non-profit
organization with a perfect blend of voice and purpose, womanSong
is geared to outreach, according to director Joann Cordell. “Our
concerts are free, but we ask people to bring canned goods for the
local food pantry.
We also perform one concert a year to help a special non profit in
the community that supports women, children and families in the Charleston
area.” Past concerts have benefited the Ronald McDonald Foundation
and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The all-volunteer group rehearses each Thursday from 12:30-2:00 p.m.,
and once a month from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons. Private
auditions should be scheduled by July 15th.
The womanSong Chorale sings all styles of music from the 12th to
the 20th century. Joann says “We sing Renaissance and contemporary,
Broadway and classical, folk and Celtic. We sing it all - and we enjoy
it all! The variety challenges the singers and keeps them energized.”
Although they have accompanists, the group often sings a capella.
“The whole point of forming the group was to get the right blend
of voices together,” says Joan. “We work very hard on
the blend; we’re not a group of soloists, but a group of singers.”
They have preformed at the Kennedy Center, the Greenbrier, Tamarack,
and for numerous area businesses and community groups. The singers
have produced “Candlelight Christmas”, a CD with 20 of
the group’s Christmas favorites.
womanSong is also accepting bookings for their 2003/2004 season through
July 15.
