Increasing Levels Of Education Increase Career Options

Marie GnageDr. Marie Gnage, President of West Virginia University at Parkersburg

“With each level of education, one’s career options increase,” emphasizes Dr. Marie Gnage, President of West Virginia University at Parkersburg. “Education has always been a valuable ‘commodity,’ an enabler. It is even more important today because without education—higher education, career choices are very limited.”

Currently there are “more women than men in the higher education pipeline. The pipeline is our future”. She added, “I always encourage women to get as much education as they possibly can. The glass ceiling still exists, but a woman has to be ready for the time when a small crack allows a woman to move into a “nontraditional” role. I do believe that theories about a woman’s place in this world have changed as there is greater recognition through research about female capability/capacity. Time and research has brought about changes in policies—and laws-- that affect women in the employment world and has greatly enabled women to achieve their career goals. There is still work to be done; we can not grow complacent or allow ourselves to be satisfied with cracks in glass ceilings or grant funded opportunities. We MUST prepare ourselves with knowledge and the educational credentials to compete in the global marketplace. And, we must compete.”

When asked what advise she would give to a sister, daughter, niece or granddaughter regarding education, she said, “Continue to learn as if your next breath depends on it. Get the education needed to prepare yourself for having more than one career in your lifetime.”

Dr. Marie Gnage is President of West Virginia University at Parkersburg. Dr. Gnage continues to lead the college in a forward direction every day. For more information about the college, courses offered, or general information, visit their website at www.wvup@edu.
