Excitement In Education!

Nancy Herholdt, Education Manager, of the WV Cultural Center, is excited about the upcoming happening at the Charleston Center.

Nancy’s main goal as education manager is to explore and develop educational materials and to provide resources and references about the history of the State of West Virginia. Currently the State Museum is being renovated. According to Nancy, “This is a long term project. Storyline timeframes are being developed as part of the museum’s total renovation”. Nancy provides on-site, classroom and web opportunities in education throughout the year for all who are interested.

Part of Nancy’s responsibilities include providing information and materials to compliment what teachers in the state are already doing or planning to do in their classrooms. A major part of what she does is to supply educational materials for teachers and students for what is commonly known as the Golden Horseshoe Awards. Since 1931, more than 15,000 West Virginia students have received the Golden Horseshoe Award in recognition of their knowledge of West Virginia history. Each year, thousands of eighth graders across the state take the Golden Horseshoe examination, and 221 are inducted into the prestigious Golden Horseshoe Society.

Another part of Nancy’s ongoing activities includes helping provide a historical chronological journey throughout history of the different characters of the state, achievements and significant accomplishments of West Virginians, and the personal qualities of those that came before us, including such determination, innovation, and family values.

Nancy believes that by providing this type of insight into the founders of the state and their achievements, it will “provide new thoughts about change for the future of West Virginia”.

The Cultural Center is located on the Capitol Complex grounds in Charleston, West Virginia.
