Living History

As Executive Director of the Putnam County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Linda Bush, is hard at work multi-tasking to provide information and provide expert help to all who are interested in events in the Putnam County area. Throughout her hectic day, there are numerous requests for information, phone calls, relocation calls, and both instate and out of state travelers needing her assistance.

According to Linda, many people call or email her for different types of information. Linda markets Putnam County as a “destination spot”. Linda organizes lots of advertising including radio, television, newspaper, magazines, and through other promotional outlets.

Linda also coordinates the Civil War re-enactment, organizing and directing approximately 100 volunteers. The last Civil War re-enactment was in March of 2007. Linda commented, “As soon as we finish with the re-enactment for one year, we are starting on next year’s one”. They have recently critiqued last year’s events to make the 2008 one even better. “Many people are interested in these types of events. We have many people, not to mention everyone who is involved in the event, providing us with new ideas, changes, suggestions for the following year’s event”, she said.

They recently celebrated the l0th anniversary of the re-enactment. Linda said, “It was wonderful. We had great weather. We have participants from 17 different states and we had between 250 – 300 different people portraying different portions of the event. The event continues to get bigger and better every year”. Linda emphasized that the event would not be possible without all the volunteers. “Many of our volunteers take a week’s vacation to participate in the event”.

Linda also co-sponsors with the Putnam County Parks and the Mary Ingles Trail Association the “Mary Ingles Living History Trail”. This event is a performance and skits along the Mary Ingles’ trail displaying life in the 1700’s. People can walk the trail, sample food, and view many exhibits of the trades of those years. Mary Ingles was kidnapped by Indians and taken to Kentucky where she lived with the tribe until she was able to escape. Ingles followed the river trail back to her home. Linda stressed again, that none of this would be possible without all the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers who support this event.
