At a recent Workforce Development workshop in Chester, WV, Judy K. Sheppard, President/CEO of Professional Services of America, Inc., in Parkersburg, West Virginia gave attendees a glimpse into the future. Her presentation entitled, “Where Do We Go From Here?” compared the workforce of today with the workforce that will be needed tomorrow.
“West Virginia, and the rest of the United States, must develop a workforce to meet the labor needs of the future”, Judy explained. “The biggest increases in jobs will require more and more education. The greatest job growth areas are in business, criminal justice, education/teaching, engineering, graphic design, healthcare, human services, legal/paralegal, nursing, and technology. As we transition into the ‘knowledge’ economy, opportunity awaits those in the fields of bioscience, intellectual property, nanotechnology, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medical research, and micro-technology. These are key areas of educational paths for the women of the future.”
According to Judy, “Skill sets will be the way people get jobs. Those with the greatest amount of ‘in demand’ skills will be the most sought after employees. To have more skill sets, employees will need more and more training.”
Judy said that we will see two distinct emerging workforce segments – the service economy and the knowledge economy. The determining factor that separates the two groups is education.
“Education and training will change in the new economy. On-line learning will become the prime learning mechanism. With companies having multiple locations, multiple distribution centers, and remote access workers, learning will happen by downloads and video conferencing, teleseminars, etc.”
“We are used to people moving to where employment is available. We are seeing a trend and will continue to see businesses relocate to where highly skilled people live, or have remote on-line offices.”
Judy strongly encouraged businesses and educational facilities to continue working together with a focus on the future needs on our changing marketplace.
