Making Women Beautiful At All Ages

Martha Brown made her dream come true. Martha was born and raised in Columbia, South America, but always had the dream of owning her own business in the United States. Holding two degrees, one in social communication/journalism and the second in esthetics, she now has her own business, Faces By Design, located at 450 Pike Street, Suite E, in Marietta, Ohio. She has owned the business since April of 2000.

She offers two lines of services for her clients. One is permanent makeup such as eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner, and lip color. She also does the coloring of the areola after breast/nipple reconstruction. Secondly, she offers high tech skin care services such as micro-dermabrasion with aluminum crystals and ultrasonic micro-dermabrasion which is crystal free. She now has diamond tip micro-dermabrasion which uses crushed diamonds. With the use of Dermafiles, another type of dermabrasion, she is able to use a hand held file that gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin. The shop also offers detailed and specific chemical peels of varying intensities.

Martha’s says that “for women who are in their 20’s, the best thing they can do for their skin is to establish a very good skin care routine. I use a special technique called ‘Face Mapping’, which allows me to examine and determine what is needed for all aspects of the facial skin. I then suggest a good routine skin care schedule and educate women about what they need to do to keep their skin healthy.” Martha also gives education and suggests treatment plans for the control of blemishes and acne.

“Women in their 30’s, should consider doing their first chemical peel. Sun damage and age spots may start appearing in 30 year old women. I highly recommend a chemical peel once a year and facials 3-4 times per year for everyone in their 30’s,” she continued.

“Beginning around age 40, women’s bodies start going through many hormonal changes. At age 40, I suggest one chemical peel per year and at least 3-6 micro peels each year. This is a good time to begin watching for signs of aging skin. The peels stimulate water retention, collagen, and other protein substances of the skin. It is like keeping the skin in a ‘state of shock’ to keep it producing the right amounts of moisture, proteins and collagens,” she added. “The secret to long lasting beautiful skin is to be consistent and repetitive in your skin care,” she noted. “For women in their 50’s and 60’s, the skin may be showing it’s lack of function. The skin takes the biggest toll as we age and therefore shows many signs of aging such as thin skin, age spots, small lines and wrinkles, and enlarged pores.” Martha has a special program called “New Beginnings” that is a steady skin care regimen with scheduled chemical peels and dermabrasions that are consistently hydrating and moisturizing the skin. She also does a special skin analysis to target skin problems before they happen. Martha said that “women in their 70’s and older, need hydration of the skin to keep good healthy firmness in the skin tissue. This is also a time that I look for any suspicious lesion, discoloration, growth or other change. If any of these are detected, then I suggest that my client contact their family physician.” Martha stressed that she works with the client’s physician to help detect early signs of suspicious cells.

For age spots, Martha uses chemical peels and lightening products. For fine lip lines, she uses muscle toners and toning masks.

One very interesting thing that Martha discussed was makeup as we age. Many people loose their ability to see clearly enough to apply some types of makeup like eyeliner and lipliner. Permanent eyeliner and lipliner are perfect solutions for women who still want to look beautiful, but have difficulty seeing up close. “Permanent makeup is a very wonderful soft, discrete procedure. Things such as thinning eyebrows due to thyroid problems and chemotherapy can be overcome with permanent eyebrows. Her lip liner is also very discreet. Martha said that you could just use clear lip gloss with the permanent lip liner and look really great. “It looks very natural,” she commented.

Martha shared that one of the saddest and most common thing she hears it that women feel that they are too old for makeup or too old to be worrying about how they look. “This is simply one of the most false things I have ever heard. Women’s self-image is a basic essential at all times of their lives, not just when they are young. If you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good about yourself, you are more inclined to look and act younger and healthier. That is what wearing makeup is all about!”

At Faces By Design, Martha offers a free consultation to women to discuss skin problems and image needs.
