Having been married for 20 years and having worked as co-owners of a business, Joy and Mark Madore are very happy and successful.

“Sometimes it is stressful. We tend to talk about business all the time. Our daughter is in college and lives in Huntington,” said Joy Madore, owner of Family First Realty in Hurricane, West Virginia.

“Mark and I are very different. Mark has an MBA and is very analytical and likes to deal with money. I like to match people with the right houses and become good friends and neighbors of my customers,” she said. “At home, Mark and I just do everything together, wash the dishes, make the bed, etc. We really don’t have defined tasks that we do. I can’t image not doing everything with Mark,” she added.

Joy and Mark met through a mutual friend. “In l986, a friend of mine asked me to go to the first WVU football game of the season. Mark was from Maine and was visiting my friend’s boyfriend. Mark was to be transferred to Iowa for a job promotion. But, just after one meeting with Joy, Mark told his boss he found someone he was really interested in and wanted to see what would come of it. We married and I moved to Iowa with him. Iowa has a special place in my heart because it is where Mark and I bought our first home and where our daughter was born,” she said.

Then Mark was transferred to Mississippi and then to Columbia, Md. “We were living between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and our daughter was age 3. The crime was so prevalent we both agreed to move back to West Virginia. We ended up in Teays Valley when we found a piece of property that we really liked. Mark fell in love with the area,” she explained.

“At that time we both had our realtor’s licenses and were working for a company that had some management problems. We saw what was happening very early on, and we sat down and talked about what our next move should be. After many long discussions, we decided to start our own realty company,” she added.

It was a big step for both Joy and her husband. Fear was the biggest issue they had to face. A friend of Mark’s gave him some good advice – to take a big step and not look back. And, they did. “When we set up our business, Joy just said that she wanted a nice place work,” so that was the basis of our business mission,” said Mark.

Their advice for married couples working and living together, “keep a sense of humor and remember how the other person approaches things may be different from yours. That doesn’t make it right or wrong, just different. Your partner’s opinion is just as important as yours. You can learn from each other and create a nice balance that makes both of you better,” they said.

Joy and Mark Madore are the owners of Family First Realty, located at #2 Chase Drive, Hurricane, W.Va. Telephone: (304) 562-2893 Web site: www.familyfirstrealty.com
