Piecing History Together
Through the centuries, American quilts have reflected women’s abilities, creativity, and responsibilities in a unique social perspective on domestic life. Fawn Valentine, weaver and author of West Virginia Quilts and Quiltmakers, has extensively researched the quilts and quilt makers of the region and the nation. The Kanawha County Public Library will host her presentations discussing American quilts and how they can be identified by patterns, fabrics and techniques.
The Dunbar Branch Library will host the program on Thursday, May 11, from 6 to 7:30 pm. The program will be held at the Main Library, 123 Capitol Street in Charleston on Thursday, May 11 at noon. Patrons may bring a lunch to the Charleston brown bag program.
At the Dunbar Library, Fawn will also offer quilt readings. Quilt owners are invited to bring their heirloom quilts to these sessions and share the quilt’s known history. In turn, Ms. Valentine will offer individual quilt assessments, identifying the era when the quilt was made, its stylistic characteristics and suggestions for its care and preservation.
To register, contact the Main Library, 343-4646 and the Dunbar Branch Library, 301 12th Street Mall, 766-7161.
