Thrifty housekeepers can count on free help from Mother Nature. Mops, throw pillows and sneakers share a common characteristic - all benefit from a day in the sun. So do bedspreads, blankets and rugs. The sun will fluff up the feathers of throw pillows, feather and down comforters and bed pillows and fade fabric stains from almost any fabric. Children’s soft toys and any clothing that must be dry cleaned is freshened with sunshine. Sunshine is a natural disinfectant, and, unlike people, most home goods benefit appreciably from sunbathing. Mint will deter ants, flies turn up their noses at the scent of basil and moths leave linens alone when they are dipped in lavender or rosemary oil. Lemon, baking soda and vinegar are homemakers essentials.
Put pre-soaped steel wool pads in a plastic bag in the freezer to keep them rusting. And nothing beats a good bashing for rug care. It’s all in the book.
